The Mackall Clan

Clan History...

MacKall of Caithness, Scotland The MacKall's of Caithness, Scotland, were originally from Ulster, Ireland. They were banished from Ireland in 326 AD, along with the three Collas's. At that time they were part of Clan Collas. Between 1100 AD and early 1400 AD they moved to Caithness, Scotland. In the mid 1500's there is recorded a James MacKall as a Baron of Caithness. In the late 1500's to the early 1600's, they fled Scotland due to non-conformity to the Roman Catholic Church. They then settled in Armagh, Ulster, Ireland. In 1650 AD, King Charles II requested aid to retake his throne. Clan MacKall of Caithness responed, During the Battle of Dunbar Captain's James MacKallroy and his brother Robert MacKabla, led two companies of the "King's Lyfe Guard of Foote". During the enuseing battle the Commander of the King's Lyfe guard ordered retreat. Sir Colonel Alexander Stewart ordered his company to defend the retreat. Never, leaving a Stewart behind, James and Robert gave the order Ad Ulitmum "to the last". There two companies were annilated. They were the only two remaining in their units. Sir Colnel Alexander Stewart was executed, upon his surender. James and Robert along with 15,000 other prisoners were marched to Durtham cathedral has Prisoners of War. By the time they arrived over one third had died. Of the remaining some were sent to fight in the French Foreign Legion in Spain, some were sold as slaves to the colonies, James and Robert among them that were sold, and the rest were left at Durtham cathedral. Of those that satyed at Durtham several starved to death. James MacKall married Mary Farr, in 1658. He had a set of twins James and Rebecca. In 1660 James died leaving his wife and kids fatherless. Mary remarried and the new husband raised the kids as his own. 350 years later the Clan is once again rediscovering its roots. Through DNA testing we have determined that we are not related to the Lowland and Southern Highland McCall's, nor are we related to the MacAulay of the same. It is believed that we were once related to the MacDonalds and McColls, however DNA evidence does not support this. Even thou we match some MacDonalds at the 12 and 25 marker levels, no MacDonald has yet to match us at the 37, 67, or 111 DNA marker levels. As of now the Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland is considering returning the MacKall Caithness, Coat of Arms, to its people. For more on its progress go to: http://clancouncil.ning.com/
